Dealing with plagiarism in a complex information society / Debbie Wheeler, & David Anderson

Debbie Wheeler, & David Anderson. (2010). Dealing with plagiarism in a complex information society. Education, Business and Society: Contemporary Middle Eastern Issues, 3(3), 166-177. Retrieved July 15, 2011, from ABI/INFORM Global. (Document ID: 2123422941).

Abstract:
The article investigates the impact of the modern information society on attitudes and approaches to the prevention of plagiarism. It examines a less punitive, more educative model which is said to be a more effective approach. It presents a case study of the education department of tertiary-level college in the United Arab Emirates, showing the programs of said university on prevention of plagiarism.  A call is made for a truly institutional response to a shared concern, with comprehensive and appropriate policies and guidelines which focus on prevention, the development of student skills, and the proactive involvement of the community, particularly the educators and students.

Three Things I learned from the article:

1. The consequences of plagiarism is more punitive in academic community than in political and business community.

2. Poorly structured research assignments and uncommunicated policies on plagiarism are the major reasons why some commit plagiarism. Teachers/educators are the key players in the determent of plagiarism in a comprehensive, appropriate, fair, developmental, transparent, and educative way.

3. Plagiarism is a relatively new concept. During the time of Greek philosophers, originality is less important. The concept emerges around the early part of the 20th century when students are required to perform various research-writing assignments.

Application / Implication of what I've learned to my work/to me as a person:
In UP, several actions are taken by the administration to deter cheating and plagiarism.  One recent plagiarism incident was the case of Dean Marvic Leonen of the College of Law.  Dean Leonen admitted his mistake and as a consequence, he tendered his resignation as Dean.  This example shows how UP community deal with plagiarism, it's really a big thing.

Reading about the article of Wheeler and Anderson makes me realize why some find it easy to plagiarize.  During my undergraduate years, my professors instilled in me the importance of acknowledging my resources.  UP values its academic integrity making all possible ways to extend this to its community - particularly to its faculty members and students.
